Ask me about year 2014

Happy new year 2015!

As usual I will complete an annual, "Ask me about the year" fact sheet. So, here goes.

Ask me about year 2014

1. What did you do in year 2014 that you'd never done before?

I went abroad to Australia and studied there for a whole year by myself. I guess that includes, staying on my own, house hopping on my own, managing bills on my own and a lot more things on my own.

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I did have new year's resolutions set up for year 2014 but I cannot remember it (this is why I never make new year's resolutions). So, I guess I did not keep it.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Not yet but I sure do hope it's soon.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Thankfully, no and hopefully, not this year either.

5. What countries did you visit?

I went to Melbourne, Australia for a year and in between visited Sydney, Australia as well. In addition, my family and I went to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto in Japan for holiday.

6. What would you like to have in 2015 that you lacked in 2014?

I would like to have improved health, mindfulness and inner strength.

7. What dates from 2014 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

9th December 2014 - I obtained my final semester results and is officially a graduated from Monash University, Australia.

31st July 2014 - The night I had a panic attack due to high fever and dehydration. It was traumatic and my mum took the next flight over to see me, which I think is the most touching thing ever and it showed me how unconditional a mother's love is for her children.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

If I were to choose between winning Microsoft Protege 2014, Australia (a national level competition competing amongst Australians) and graduating.......GRADUATING.

9. What was your biggest failure?

If I were to choose between my health problems and not spending enough time with my family....not spending enough time with family.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Yes, I did suffer illness. I have (am still having) acid reflux problems and gastric.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Definitely the couple rings I bought from Tokyo Disney Sea for my boyfriend and I because both of us love Disney very much (our bucket list is to visit every Disney theme park in the world). Also, a tuna sushi strap from Japan as a Christmas gift for a friend because it was so funny and spot on according to his vision board it was almost, genius on my side (haha yes self-praise, don't mind me).

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

I wouldn't say behaviour but rather character. My landlord (not the first one, the second one) named Toan has one of the most pure and kind heart I have ever encountered. His intentions are so good willed and his attitude is so pleasant it was almost impossible to believe such a person existed. He made my experience in Australia a really good one and I am very grateful for that.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled?

There were two people who made me rather disappointed. One was a close friend, which I am not sure if I can consider close anymore but he was rather....disappointing as a friend. Then again, I am not someone who holds onto broken plates so let the bygone be bygones. The other person is my first landlord, she made my experience in Australia a living nightmare and I am so glad I moved out of that place. Who hurt more? At this moment, none of them because those who do not give a damn (mind my language) about me does not deserve my attention or time. As Richard and Alex always advised me, "Let it go is the best solution".

14. Where did most of your money go?

The later half of our Japan trip but it was money well spent. My accidental Christmas gift for the family hahah (but now I really have to replenish my savings account and find myself a decent job).

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Same as last year, DISNEYLAND (or to be precise, Tokyo Disney Sea).

16. What song will always remind you of 2014?

Hero by Mariah Carey.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: (a) happier or sadder? (b) thinner of fatter? (c) richer or poorer?

Am definitely fatter and poorer in health but not in wealth, which is sadder.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Seeing my grandmother more often when I had the time to do so.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Focusing my time and energy on people who did not matter.

20. How did you spend your Christmas?

With the people I love in a foreign country (family trip in Japan).

21. Did you fall in love in 2014?

Yes, I did again and again since 21st July 2011.

22. What was your favourite TV program?

Big bang theory (but it's starting to loose its appeal)

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I did, then I let it go. So no, no hate. Instead of spending energy to hate I am channeling that amount of focus to love the people that deserves my love.

24. What was the best book you read?

Nothing in particular. All were kind of normal.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Sadly, none. The industry is going down hill.

26. What did you want and get?

I wanted to graduate and I did through my own hard work and effort.

27. What did you want and not get?

I wanted to score Distinction for one of my subject and didn't. Also due to my own doing, so nothing to feel bad about here.

28. What was your favourite film of this year?

Big Hero 6 (I CRIED BUCKETS).

29. What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Every time I came home after being away for so long (The home cooked food, the love from my parents, the laughs I shared with them and the cuddles I got from my boyfriend).

30. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2014?

Comfortable clothing.

31. What kept you sane?

Love.

32. Which celebrity/ public figure did you fancy the most?

Gui gui, Aaron Yan & Michelle Phan (but all kind of so so now)

33. What political issue stirred you the most?

MH370/MH17, not really political but it was national tragedies that made me really sad.

34. Who did you miss?

My family and boyfriend but not anymore because I'm back.

35. Tell us a valuable lesson you learned in 2014.

I learned that strength is all you need to find when the going gets tough and the tough always gets going but sometimes, it goes away really slowly and the journey is excruciating but you just need to find strength and persevere. Also, family is the most important thing you need to focus on in life. Nothing else really matters.

36. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

And then a hero comes along, with the strength to carry on, and you cast your fears aside, and you know you can survive. So when you feel like hope is gone, look inside you and be strong, and you'll finally see the truth, that a hero lies in you.

Cheers 2014, welcome 2015! :-)

Not everyone is living life

Letter to my future self #2

Dear Amy,

Yes, it is that time of the year again. Final exam period~

However, I just felt like writing to you another letter today because I overheard our dad said these few words, "Just live the days". You know we have always admired our dad, right? From time to time again he seem to give advices or say things that just makes so much sense. Amy, are you living life now?

Going to work from 9AM to 6PM everyday; earning money, spending money; meet new dead lines; meet expectations; repeat routine seven days a week, four weeks a month, 12 months a year.....this is not living life. If you are going through life repeating a day to day job then you are not living life. Living life is making a difference to the earth you are walking on; go out and plant a tree, support a recycling campaign, take the weekend off and visit the orphanage, spend some time at the old folks home, visit some old friends and see what is going on with their lives.

Moreover, are you neglecting some people because of your career? Do not forget, Amy that your end goal is not the pay check your job promises you; that is just a tool you need to achieve your end goal. Your end goal is to live a happy life and provide for your parents and family. Therefore, are you neglecting your end goal? Have dinner with your family every night, make sure your brother is adjusting to university well, do not forget to check on with Wei-Lim's well-being (is he stress up with work too?). There's so much one overlooks if they are too engrossed with their career, don't fall into that category.

Remember, the world we live in, the materialistic world that is, is created by humans. People created currency, big corporations, endless demand and supply cycles, commercials, technology. All these were created by human in vain. Do we really need to earn so much to fall prey to these endless and limitless cycle of cat and mouse? No, we do not. Life, just live it comfortably.

Do whatever it takes to provide enough for yourself and your family and live life the way you have always imagined it to be but do not forget your promises when you were younger. Stay true to your beliefs and principles. Do not let the ugly harsh poisonous world change you. Should there be change make it a good one. Change for the better and not the worst.

I know you can do it, Amy. Nothing has ever stopped you from achieving your dreams and goals so do not give up now.

Signing off, 20 years old Amy
Date: 30 June
Residing at: Clayton, Australia

Love you.

Personality quizzes: Getting to know me better

There is a quiz trend lately by Talent Today, which have been spreading like wildfire. I never really find personality quizzes accurate but this particular one by Talent Today is quite surprising.

Click here to do the personality quiz

It has about 100 questions and a detailed analysis after the results are posted. Below is an analysis of mine and I thought it might be interesting to share a bit about myself through this personality quiz.

There are 5 categories that were analyze. I will start with the "yellow" category, which is "Communicate".

Communicate 4.3

Ease in Public 5/10
You can be reserved but that does not prevent you from expressing your opinion in public or to new people.

This sentence is extremely accurate. I'm an introvert and most of the time I prefer to stay silent and observe discussions. However, if I take strong interest in a topic or if a discussion concerns something I'm passionate about then I can become very vocal about my point of views.

Opening up to Others 2/10 (Lowest)
You can be suspicious of other people's ideas, you find it difficult to pay attention to the ideas of others.

I am not exactly proud of this because this stems from trust issues. Generally, I love listening to other people's opinion but because I have very strong individual personality. I tend to be very skeptical towards other's ideas and opinions.

Diplomacy 3/10
You favor direct method of communication. You may sometimes be insensitive to your audience.

Extremely accurate, I dislike people who beat around the bush or put up a fake frontal act. If someone is unhappy about anything I would love to hear their honest opinion about it and vice versa. If I do not agree with anything I do not hesitate to voice my opinion. In terms of being insensitive, I guess this is pretty accurate because if I were to be honest I would not care if I'm directly disagreeing with the CEO.

Persuasion 7/10
You do not necessarily like to argue, but do not hesitate to defend your points of view when necessary.

As mentioned, I can be very vocal in defending what I believe in, but I do not partake in childish and unnecessary arguments as it does not contribute to any greater good and is a waste of time.

Manage 5

Leading 8/10
You are influential and like to make decisions in a group. You find it easy to assume the role as a leader.

I would say this is a natural habit of mine since young. I have been actively engaged in leadership roles since primary school and thus, I tend to take up leadership roles wherever I go. Whether or not I am good at it all the time is another matter that could only be identified with results.

Taking Responsibility 2/10 (Lowest)
You are careful and show restraint before committing to a project, you do not wish to assume sole responsibility for any failure.

Extremely accurate. I used to commit to anything that came my way. However, after years of training with AIESEC and time management problems, I have learned to take careful considerations before taking up commitments. I would say this have taught me the importance of prioritizing.

Organization 4/10
You are flexible, you rely more on your ability to adapt than on your comprehensive approach to achieve results.

Extremely accurate. I guess this is a results of my project management experience. After managing a few projects I have learned the importance to be flexible towards situations and problems. Ever since coming to Australia on my own I have became more adaptable to just about any changes.

Vision 6/10
You are able to focus on details and address situations objectively to be more efficient.

Do I focus on details and address situations objectively? It depends, sometimes I look at the bigger picture instead of narrowing it down to details. It really depends on the situation on what I'm working at but yes, at the end of the day, I'm all about efficiency. (As Wei-Lim have put it, it is not that fun to work with me as I favor results above anything else)

Dare 7.8 (Highest Area)

Self-confidence 9/10 (Highest)
You are very self-assured and confident about your potential. You avoid questioning your situation when it is not necessary.

There is no point in hiding this side of me. Yes, I am confident in my own potential. I may not be the best but I have always pushed myself to be closest to the best. I have worked hard towards self-development, gaining experiences and learning new cultures so it is important to be confident about all that you have gained.

Independent mind 8/10
You are not easily influenced and favor your own opinion. You are able to distance yourself from criticism.

This is both a pro and con. Yes, I favor my own opinion but I open myself to understanding other's opinion because that is how I grow but I do not conform to majority. I have a very strong individual personality, which could be hard to deal with.

Creativity 7/10
You show originality but without questioning established procedures.

That sentence is self-explanatory. I am from a creative background. I love anything to do with using my creativity and I find it really hard to follow routine, too mundane for me.

Autonomy 7/10
You like to develop independently even if you like sharing your achievements.

Very accurate. It should be clear by now that I value individuality. Then again, yes, I love sharing achievements because that is what happiness is, to be able to share what makes you happy with the people you care for and love. To achieve dreams and goals with others is a blessing but at the same time I value individual achievement a lot. Best of both worlds principles~

Adapt 3.8 (Lowest Area)

Stress-management 2/10 (Lowest)
You are sensitive to stress, you may lose your cool under pressure.

Everyone who knows me well or have worked with me will know I am really bad at managing stress. I work harder under high levels of stress. However, I tend to allow myself to be so stressed up that I will end up ill. How many times have I fell sick because of stress? A lot but I am working on it. These days, I take health very seriously.

Responsiveness 4/10
You like to analyze situations and give yourself the time to make decision. You may sometimes lack spontaneity.

Not that accurate as it depends on situation. If it is not urgent, then yes, I love to analyze the situation first before deciding on anything. However, if it is urgent and in dire need of attention then I am spontaneous about it. (This is according to what I have experience through L'Oreal Brandstorm)

Patience 6/10
You like to swiftly obtain concrete results. You are able, however, to be patient and look ahead to the future.

Have I ever mentioned I was 93KG back in high school? Yes, I think that is when I trained to be patient in achieving results. I trained 2 years to loose 45KG. My fittest self was 48KG. Self-explanatory, I can be very patient in achieving results. Then again, during that process I set mile stones for myself and yes, I like to obtain those milestones accordingly and if I do not, demotivation do set in often.

Respect for Authority 3/10
You don't like organization that are too authoritative. You like to benefit from a certain freedom of action, sometimes to the detriment of applicable rules.

Extremely accurate. Organizations that are too authoritative loathes me because I believe that in order to progress, innovate and improve is to be able to allow individual potentials to make change.

Excel 6.8 (Second Highest Area)

Determination 7/10
You are persistent and determined to meet your objectives, you do not give in when faced with difficulties.

Extremely accurate. If there is one strength I am not humble about it will be my level of determination. Not to boast or anything, the road to being champions of L'Oreal Brandstorm 2013 was not filled with unicorns or rainbows. It was filled with high levels of pressure, fighting against time, lots of arguments, tears, frustration and personal obligations but never have I once gave up. When I set my eyes on something, I get it done. I have permanent prolapsed lumbar discs now. It hurts doing minor chores like washing a few plates but will I let it stop me from greatness to come? No. Watch out for me.

Ambition 4/10
You wish to progress at your own pace. You do not attempt to climb the professional ladder at all costs.

There is a difference between wanting to climb that corporate ladder and being successful. I have all the intentions in the world to be successful but just not in the rat race. I have no interest in being a chess piece for the corporate world. Backstabbing and office politics to climb that ladder? No, not for me.

Work ethic 7/10
You are not afraid of hard work even if you like to keep time for yourself.

I am someone who can work until 4.30A.M. to finish up work at hand. I used to be a workaholic but not now. If I were to burn midnight oil for work these days it is because it is necessary. Life cannot be all rainbows and unicorns. Work life balance is flawed. Efficiency and results speaks for itself.

Competitive Spirit 9/10 (Highest)
You are comfortable in competitive situations. You like to be challenged and prefer competition to cooperation.

Not that accurate because I am not only comfortable in competitive situations I PERFORM BETTER IN COMPETITIVE SITUATIONS. In fact, competition is my source of motivation. Competition fuels me. I love to be challenge and I love to compete. This attitude of mine have been cultivated since primary school and I am proud of it. It makes me challenge even myself.

Summary

That is all for now. Was it accurate? I would say, yes, this personality test is by far one of the most accurate test I have taken. As you could see, I have a lot of room for improvements. Being abroad in Australia have taught me a lot and I am still learning day after day. Perhaps I will improve in certain areas after this.

Until then, cheers.

Are you afraid?

I wrote this in August 2013 on my private blog. Just thought I would share it with the world because I have overcome all these fear listed below.

Fear is what defeats us.
I know it yet I still succumb to it.

I fear of failure.
I know it yet I don't walk away from it.

I fear heart break.
I know it yet I think of it.

I fear change.
I know it yet I don't want it.

I fear not changing.
I know it yet I want it.

Fear breaks oneself.
I know it yet I still fear it.

Learn to overcome fear, with love.

[Awareness] Cancer is not always fatal but it sure does hurt

Hey guys,

I'm here to share my story on cancer. When I was younger I did not understand what pain meant. I did not understand what appreciation meant. Furthermore, I did not understand what hurt meant.

Then, it all changed. My grandmother was diagnosed with cervical cancer somewhere between year 2007/2008. I cannot really remember much. In fact, I can't really remember much about my life in those few years. Well, I'm not surprise since most people want to forget something traumatic.

What I do remember though is my mother would cry very often when we visit my grandmother. Sometimes, I see her cry when she's just doing mundane tasks. Sometimes, my mother would cry at any given time of the day, perhaps while thinking of my grandmother.

All I could remember is I would stay over with my grandmother on weekends (since I'm with her on weekdays for school) to take care of her. The grandmother who once, was strong enough to carry me on her back back in kindergarten/primary school is now so frail and fragile. I would bathe her for she couldn't do it herself without help. I would talk to her for she'll need someone to talk to. I would help her with her meals and with each step she takes, each action she struggles with, I will die a little inside.

Then one day, if I'm not mistaken, my grandmother shared with me these exact words, "I didn't want your mother to tell you about my condition". That's all I could remember. What more she said, I wanted to forget. All I know is, this was when I truly understood what love from a grandmother meant.

As I'm typing these words my tears can't help itself from brimming in the sockets of my eyes. It's not something I want to recall. You have no idea how much fear runs through my spine whenever my father tells me, "Your mother is going for a medical check up" or when my mother says, "Your grandmother is not well recently".

By the way, my grandmother survived cancer. She's still alive now and healthy. She's strong and she's my hero.

I love my grandmother very much. She cared for me since I was a little child. She showered me with love like no other. Even till today, she loves me more and never less.

Cherish the people you love and appreciate them while you can. Family is always the most important part of my life. Each of my family are a part of me. I love each and every single one of them and I believe you do as well.

Therefore, I would like to propose a call for action;

In the spirit of lifting the spirits of cancer patients going through post cancer treatment, I was glad to know that AXA AFFIN is collaborating with National Cancer Society Malaysia where AXA AFFIN will fund one day daycare to one patient for every outreach achieved among the blogging community. To us, one day may be a meager, but to those in need, it's a gift that they would cherish forever.

If you have had an experience with someone diagnosed with cancer, do share. Even if you have not had such a grueling experience, share what you know about cancer. It could be about symptoms, treatments, preventions etc. Also, once you wrote your article do e-mail the link to richard.moh@lionandlion.com. Thank you.

With love,
Amy Lim

[Food] Happy New Year BBQ dinner

I have been busy lately and this is a really delayed post on our New Year eve's dinner. It has been a year or so my family started to eat in more often. Plus, my mother has found her passion in cooking and making us fat with good food. That's not the point though, the point is, we enjoy having a good family dinner at home. So....

Feast your eyes!

BBQ German Sausages

BBQ Pork

Watermelon Salad *warning*
Do not put cheese if you attempt to try this salad or eat at your own risk

BBQ Steak

Something is grilling.....

BBQ Lamb

All the meat lovers unite for much slaughter has been done tonight....

Always remember to have a balance meal. It is highly not advisable to consume too much meat in your daily intake. Kindly ensure greens are found on your plate and an occasional sighting of an apple like fruit is found.

That's all for now folks!

Till then,
With love.
